Irma Y Ramirez

Irma Ramirez is a doctoral student in the UIC Sociology Department. She is a second-generation immigrant and first-generation college student, who is dedicated to making higher education a more accessible and inclusive space. Her recent work examines the role community-based organizations have in helping low-income, students of color access higher education. Her future research will examine how the state shapes the ethno-racialization and citizenship status of Indigenous migrant families in the U.S.

Irma has multiple degrees and an extensive background in higher education. She earned her Master of Arts in Sociology at UIC. She also has a Master’s in Education (Higher Education and Adult Learning) and Bachelor of Arts (Sociology) from Grand Valley State University. Prior to her role in UIC OUR, Irma has held multiple roles at UIC, Grand Valley State University, and AmeriCorps in college instruction, research, academic advising, experiential learning, DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) programming and evaluation, and undergraduate research programming. As a former McNair Scholar, Irma is passionate about helping students gain undergraduate research experience.
